I am really concerned by the Government’s latest proposals for local council reform.
From the outset, there was a clear commitment to respect existing local authority boundaries and recognise the distinct character of our communities. However, these proposals would see areas such as Chilworth, Nursling and Rownhams be absorbed into a larger urban Southampton - despite strong local opposition.
Many residents took the time to respond to the consultation, making clear how important it is to preserve the identity of our towns and villages. Parish and local councils, who understand their communities best, also do not appear to have been properly reflected in these plans.
There are also real questions about how these new authorities would operate in practice – from maintaining appropriate local services to ensuring long-term financial sustainability. Villages, towns and cities all have different needs, and it is not clear how those differences will be respected under the current proposals.
If you would like to have your say, I am gathering views as part of an open letter to the Secretary of State, which can read by clicking here. You can add your name below.
