Second Hand September with Oxfam

second Hand Sept

This year and last year I have taken part in Second Hand September with Oxfam, promoting sustainable fashion.

As part of the campaign I have a good old wardrobe clear out and donate to Oxfam, but I also do my utmost to make sure I am always wearing second hand, pre-loved clothes when I speak in the Chamber. Colleagues are often surprised that I buy second hand, and at the weekend love wearing my daughter’s hand me down hoodies, but it makes perfect sense. If we were all to make sure we wore our clothes for 7 months longer it would make a huge difference to the waste stream.

Globally we produce 13 million tons of textile waste each year, 95% of which could be recycled. Each and every year 47 million items are diverted from landfill by being donated to Oxfam.
