Planned Closure of NatWest Romsey Branch
I am deeply disappointed to learn that NatWest intends to close its Romsey branch on 13th October 2025. This follows a troubling pattern of reduced in-person banking services across our local area and will leave only TSB and Nationwide with a fixed presence in Romsey town centre.
This is yet another blow to customers and businesses who rely on face-to-face services - particularly older or more vulnerable residents who may not have easy access to online banking. The removal of physical banking facilities threatens the long-term vitality of our high streets and undermines efforts to ensure inclusive access to financial services.
It is also extremely concerning that, in its communications to customers, NatWest has pointed to the Post Office on Church Street as an alternative access point - seemingly unaware that this directly managed Post Office is itself under review for disposal. Even more astonishing is the suggestion that customers in Romsey could instead use the banking hub in Cowes, Isle of Wight - without any reference to the fact that this would involve a ferry journey.
I have accepted NatWest’s offer of a meeting and will be raising these serious concerns with them directly. I would urge all local residents and customers to make their views known to the bank and share how this closure will impact them.
At a time when community access to essential services should be a priority, this decision is both short-sighted and ill-considered. I will continue to advocate for practical, local solutions to ensure that Romsey residents are not left behind.
